Ad Hoc CC vs Agricola at Chiswick (Win off the last ball!)
An excellent all-round team performance brings a squeaky-bum-time win off the last ball.
Agricola Innings
On the advice of Vice Captain Zach, Adhoc put Agricola into bat on a lovely evening in Chiswick. The opening bat bristled with intent but failed to get into his stride, Zach and Andy keeping them to only 22 of the first four overs, with the two also combining for a run out early doors. Jack, on his debut, bowled a hostile two overs with the batsmen struggling to get bat to ball. Lord, at the other end, bowled the game’s only maiden and showed his astute tactical brain by serving up a delightful loopy full toss which their No. 3 obligingly missed attempting a inglorious hoik aimed at Ian T who was manfully patrolling the cow corner boundary in between puffing a sly fag or two. Pumped up on nicotine Ian T bowled a miserly spell (9 off 2 overs), while Ian Almond, another handy debutant, cleaned up Agricola’s No. 5.
With the bowling end changed after 10 overs the strike bowlers were brought on with immediate impact - Matt taking a sharp caught and bowled to dismiss their No. 4 and Law Snr bowling so slowly that no matter how hard they swung the batsmen couldn’t beat the boundary huggers on the leg side. With scoreboard pressure telling it was time for even less pace on ball so David, having recovered from gently jogging after the ball at fine leg for most of the first 16 overs, was summoned for his left arm lolly pops. Agricola's No. 8 melted under the pressure of facing such eminently hittable bowling and promptly skied a ball to Zach on the leg side.
Law Jnr, from the other end, took two wickets in his first over, including a well taken stumping by Terry. With two decent batsmen retired on 25 waiting to come back in Law Jnr instructed Terry to stop being quite so efficient behind the stumps and he dutifully (but unintentionally) fluffed a tough gloved chance. The next over David could not resist a dolly of a caught and bowled chance bringing their opener back in for the last over. But fears of a late rally proved unfounded with Agricola stumbling to only 117 off their 20 overs.
Adhoc Innings
Scanning his batting options and considering such a below par total on a decent, if slow wicket, Captain Law sent out Lord and Lewy hoping for a steady start and they obliged with some excellent running keeping us up with rate for the first 5 overs. But things slowed down after Lord reached 27 not out in good time, with Lewy reaching his 25 a few overs later with sweetly struck six. In strolled Zach, fresh from breaking the fingers of two bowlers in the nets pre-season, only to block three balls before taking a huge swing at the fourth and getting bowled. Ian A played himself in before unleashing some lovely straight hitting to bring up his 26, getting the rate back down to 6 an over in the process. Ian T tried to follow suit but picked out cover for a useful 14.
Matt and Jack didn’t trouble the scorer (great job again Andy!), both registering ducks, but only taking up four balls between them leaving Terry and Law Jnr with a tense last few overs. Some cheeky running left 9 to win of the last. After a two singles and a 2 from a mindless shy at the stumps, Terry was on strike with 5 needed of 2 balls. Terry had big swing, missed the ball, but did enough to put off the keeper, who was standing up to the stumps, and Law Jnr scurried through for a bye.
4 required off 1…
With the field set back on the boundary (apart from wide cow corner for some strange reason) the bowler pitched the ball up on middle and Law Jnr slogged it through midwicket (someone had to use Zach’s new bat) to win the match, capping a great team performance against decent opposition.
Fines
(Voluntary) Fines on the day:
Waved fines: For his golden duck Jack would have been obliged to get the first round but this was waved by management as he was not aware of Adhoc’s constitution before going out to bat.
Another game, another last ball win, another hero - well umpired Zach!
Dodgers Innings
Winning the toss Adhoc put Dodgers in on what proved to be a bowler’s paradise. Zach and Andy were typically tight up front keeping them to just 13 off the first four. Andy cleaned up their No 2 but a certain M. Dollin was still hanging around at the other end until he skied the returning Sardar to Law Jnr at long on for steady 20. At the other end, Stephen (perhaps a sign of things to come) was having a bit of a mare going for 17 off his two overs. Overs 5 to 8 went for 31 but Ian and Matt pulled them back, going for a miserly 12 between them in the next four, with Terry taking a good catch off Matt to remove their No 4.
What followed were, perhaps, the four most devastating overs in Adhoc history. Jish, returning from a career threatening injury (OK don’t over do it Ed.), bowled some unplayable variations. First a half tracker hit something and shot along the floor trapping the hapless No. 3 in front of middle for 24. The next batsman middled his first ball straight down the ground only for Stephen to take a stunning one handed catch running back at long off.
Hat trick ball...
With new batsman (NJ) expecting him to go for the stumps, Jish cleverly bowled a waist high full toss that was edged straight to Law Snr at gully. The least said about his attempt at a catch the better but Jish was not finished, the next over again outthinking the batsman with a leg side full toss that was top edged straight to Andy at short fine leg. At the other end Law Snr got some turn and bounce (yes the pitch was that bad) tempting batsmen 6 & 7 into providing Zach and Andy with some catching practice.
With Dodgers struggling to post a decent total it was time to for Lewy’s loopers (don’t you mean flight and guile Ed.). “That length” the batsmen muttered ruefully in the pub afterwards, their hands still shaking from the trauma of not being able to get him away for any meaningful runs. Law Jnr finished of the innings with a caught and bowled, capping another fine all round performance in the field.
Adhoc Innings
Having batted at 11 & 10 last week, Andy and Law Snr boldly took up the option of opening. While Andy, with a spring in his step, hit a breezy 5, before getting caught, Law Snr played out 18 balls for 7 runs (back at 10 next week old man). Sardar also decided to drop anchor, somehow managing to bat even slower taking 13 balls for just 4 before getting run out. Zach (3) was unlucky to be run out after his bat got stuck in the ground going a quick single.
With 98 suddenly looking like a competitive score Ian Almond proved a tougher nut to crack hitting a quick 25, assisted by Jish (9) until he too was run out. Matt, having thought he wouldn’t get at a bat at No 7 (this is Adhoc Mash!), was caught for two ball duck. David (2) was caught shortly afterwards, leaving Stephen facing with two required from the last over. A gettable task you might think for one of Adhoc’s star players last season. But inexplicably Stephen suddenly became possessed by the spirit of Sunil Gavaskar on that fateful June day at Lord's in 1975.
Dot followed dot followed dot. Three balls. No runs. And no danger of the ball breaching the tight ring of fielders. Finally Stephen came close to timing one “Yes. No. Sorry” came the call as Law Snr trudged off the park, run out by a mile. Out strode Terry, the hero of last week. “Yes. No. Sorry” came the call and back strode Terry without facing a ball.
Ian, who was retired on 25 came in to the rather dangerous non-strikers end for the last ball. Two required off one.
NJ bowls a wide one, Lordy swings, misses, and the Dodges celebrate. But wait…
Zach sheepishly (but fairly) gives a wide much to the consternation of the Dodgers fielders. Now one required off the last. This time NJ bowls a quicker one beating both Stephen (no surprise there surely Ed.) and the keeper to go for four byes.
Man of the match: Ian A. for 25 off 24 balls and being the only player to get into double figures!

Ad Hoc CC v HM Treasury and Cabinet Office
HM Treasury and Cabinet Office Innings
The Treasury won the toss and chose to bat on a breezy evening playing into the hands of Ad Hoc plan of squeezing them with the ball before making a meal of the chase and winning off the last ball (which worked perfectly apart from Rob B. batting too fast).
Having not taken a wicket the whole of last season, Greg bowled their opener of his second ball and was typically economical going for 3 off his two overs ably assisted by A. Spring who went for only 8. Second change bowler Rob B. (in his 2nd game for Ad Hoc) teased their other opener into picking out Jack at mid off going for just 4 runs. From the other end, Jack’s first ball was hit for the first 4 of the game and Terry’s profligate (his words not mine) keeping meant that 5 wides down leg pushed his first over past the 12 run mark to incur the first bowling fine of the season. Jack pulled it back in his second over, however, and was unlucky that debutant Christian dropped a swirler at mid-off.
Lordy bowled some excellent wind-assisted away swing going for only 7, while Mash swung it the other way beating the bat consistently until HMT’s No. 3 was surprised by Mash’s only bad ball and chipped to Greg at square leg. Pick of the bowlers, however, was Christian bowling two of their middle order before their No. 8 picked out Greg at mid-on. From the other end J Law was working his usual magic, bowling a rank full-toss down legside to wet the batsmen’s appetite followed by straight one that was heaved at gloriously. Bowled J Law, the shame.
At the death Sardar kept it tight with Law Jnr slightly more expensive (bringing Greg in from the boundary only to bowl a long hop that was smashed past him for 4 – great captaincy…) but with two daft run-outs in the last over HMT were bowled out for a highly gettable 95.
Ad Hoc Innings
Law Jnr selflessly sent himself in first and equally selflessly got out in the first over (to a rather tasty head hunting bouncer) purely in an attempt to ensure that the rest of the team got a bat... Lord and Sardar stuck around putting on a 50 partnership with some excellent running. Sardar got to his 25 in a respectable 39 balls, while Lord was bowl for 22 off 33. Mash was looking good, hitting his first runs for Ad Hoc this season, before failing to clear mid-on hitting down the ground.
Rob B., warned that a strike rate of less than 50% meant a £2 fine, came down the wicket and lofted his first ball over mid-off for two, pushing the field back in process and relieving some of the scoreboard pressure with some excellent cuts and mows to cow corner. Jack chipped in with 1 from 5 balls (Fine) bringing Searle to the crease with 6 needed of the last 2 overs. Five runs and a very generous wide not given left Greg with the honours of paddling the first ball of the last over round the corner for a single to win the match.

On closer inspection of the scorebook it was noted that Jack also had a strike rate of less than 50%... Sorry mate… Playing for Ad Hoc is getting a little expensive…
Felixstowe Docks CC v Ad hoc CC - Friday 26th July 2013
Ad Hoc CC innings
With the Laws stuck in traffic David took the reigns and decided to bat on a lovely evening in Felixstowe. We arrived just in time to see Stephen bowled by a beauty of an outswinging yorker. But the innings was quick to recover with Ian smashing the bowling all over Coronation Park (when I say all over, read - between square leg and cow corner). With Ian rocketing along and batting looking very easy it was decided to let him bat to his 50 off just 33 balls. After a scratchy start David hit a quick 48 before he and Sardar (30) retired to bring in Graeme who smashed 35 and NJ who holed out for 10. Zach wrapped the innings up with a quick 9.
Felixstowe Docks CC Innings
Zach, as seems to be his habit, took a wicket off the first ball - David taking a dolly at cover - and soon bowled their other opener. T Law and J Law collected a pair of caught and bowls only after Law junior bowled 4 full tosses in a row to the amusement of all present. NJ bowled well taking three wickets including the dangerous Read, who made 39. Ian took two catches behind the stumps (one off NJ one off Kumar) but decided not stand up to Stephen's dibbly away swingers despite Law Jnr pointing out the potential for stumpings (more on that later). A good all round performance against a side that only play once or twice a year led to a resounding 86 run win.
Saturday 27th July - Milden v Ad Hoc CC - Milden, Suffolk
Milden Innings
With Andy taking up the option of opening (having batted 11 on Friday) Ad Hoc elected to bowl first, while he completed his 20 mile cycle to Milden. Normally I would go into detail about the bowling and fielding but there was only one highlight of the innings. Jish bowled a respectable(ish) ball that ended up in the adjacent field and all the Ad Hoc fielders began to trudge over to begin the search. All that is apart from Sardar who ran the length of the pitch shouting "Don't worry I'll get it". Ignoring the cries of "mind the ditch" from the locals he jumped the fence and suddenly disappeared from view but was soon sighted scrambling up the other side.
Once everyone had managed to recover from laughter enough to continue the game, the reluctant Kumar picked up two wickets with some lovely spin bowling. Despite it being agreed before the match that players would retire on 25 Milden's No. 9 managed to hit three sixes and four fours before eventually being retired on 25????? Some equally dodgy scoring meant that there were 15 runs difference between the runs in the book and the total they came up with. Being good guests we thought better than to make a fuss.
Adhoc Innings
Andy and J Law put together a typically frantic (and short) opening partnership before T Law got bogged down hitting a slow 21 off 25. When we lost Kumar, Jish and Zach for a combined total of 9, getting close to Milden's total looked unlikely until NJ and Stephen got a hurry on before both getting out. Sardar was playing well ably supported by David and then Ian at the death. When the last over arrived we needed a still improbable 19 to win. Luckily for us the Milden bowler went into meltdown bowling wide after wide and Ian and Sardar swung and scurried until suddenly we needed just 2 to win off the last ball with Sardar on strike. To the astonishment of all present Sardar BLOCKED a back of a length ball into the offside for a single.
So many ifs and buts. But it was not Sardar's fault. Those before him were collectively far more to blame. If Tom hadn't batted as if he was hungover and slept in van the night before. If Tom hadn't hit a for a single a ball that would have been a wide (2 runs lost). If Zach hadn't got out to ball that would have been a wide (another 2 runs lost). If David had got his derrière out of the way a ball that (yes you guessed it) would have been a wide. If Milden village had a single soul who could count. And last but not least if hadn't given my dad that fatal extra over that ruined his figures and our chances... You get the idea. But all in all a very diplomatic result.
Ad Hoc CC v Brockwell 49ers - Saturday 27th July - Milden, Suffolk
Ad Hoc Innings
Straight into the next game. Ad hoc batted first and Stephen had certainly enjoyed his BBQd burger, bludgeoning 26 from 13. David hit a quick 23 before giving Ian catching practice behind the stumps off Grahame's bowling (ouch). Law Jnr found a bit form before retiring but NJ (1) and Zach (Golden) were unlucky to get out cheaply. Sardar hit a steady 24 before honourably retiring to get some more batsmen in. Jish (7) and Kumar (10) also sportingly retired themselves to let Andy and J Law face the last over. A good all round batting display left the 49ers with a notional 153 for victory.
Brockwell Innings
Our best fielder turned out to be the sub fielder from the 49ers, who took a catch off a double bouncer from Jish (I have never seen someone more embarrassed to take a wicket) and ran out another of his team mates, before he was removed from the fray.
The dangerous Graeme was caught at long off by Zach from the bowling of Sardar, bringing Ian to the crease. His innings started well, informing us that he was going to hit it to vacant cow corner boundary and then doing just that. Having reached a useful 19 and having seen off Zach it was time to for Stephen's nibbly, dibbly swingers. "There are so many people in this team I don't want to get out to", Ian remarked as Stephen came in to bowl. Perhaps with this in mind, Ian tried push the first ball to cover (rather than wallop it to the leg side) and was beaten by the inswing at a leasing length. As he prodded forward his back leg dragged out of the crease and T Law completed a gloriously celebrated stumping.
With Ian and Graeme back in the hutch the last rites of the innings were administered by David, who first bowled a surprised batsman with a quicker ball and then bowled a clever legside wide for another stumping. "No one comes down the wicket to me", he huffed, kindly pointing the way back to the pavilion.
Ad Hoc Outlaws CC v Brockwell 49ers - 31 August 2013 - South Park
Ad Hoc Outlaws CC Innings
Adhoc chose to bat first and sent in Baron Spring and Snr Management to open. 49ers captain Graeme rather unsportingly got the wicket of J Lo in the first over, caught at fly slip, while Baron Spring hit brisk 16. Rob got himself out in comical circumstances, confidently charging their slow left armer before running back into his crease and guiding an effortless catch to Ian T. behind the stumps. Overseeing the carnage at the other end was Mark A. (playing his first game for Ad Hoc this year) who decided some Boycottesque crease occupation was in order. After steadying the innings Mark took one last mow at the 49ers slow left armer and was bowled for an epic 12 ball duck, the like of which we may never see again. ( At Mark's behest, the fines system has been altered to cater for such a incident happening in the future)
Luckily for Ad Hoc, Mash came to the rescue hitting his best knock this year, steering us to safer waters with an unbeaten 27, ably assisted by Jish (10), who was run out by Sardar who we had kindly lent to the 49ers. Lord Stephen was looking good for his 17 before picking out Graeme at cow corner, bringing in Zach for one of the brief cameos that have characterised his season (to much coaching in the off season). Jnr Management and Terry scrambled some useful runs at the ended leaving 49ers a teasing 120 to win on a typically dodgy South Park track.
49ers innings
With big hitters Ian and Graeme holding themselves back in the order. Ad Hoc took the pace of the ball, bowling flight-n'-guile specialists Snr Mngt, Jish and Mark first up not allowing 49ers to get ahead of the rate and not getting out their openers too early (good thinking chaps). The wickets finally came when Baron Spring and Father Matthew removed both openers. Rob (bowling his mercurial legspin) and Lord Stephen kept it quite tight but 49ers were still in the game.
Law Jnr almost got Ian T. caught behind off a glove from a South Park lifter but Terry misjudged the distance and ran towards the stumps, only to see the ball land where he had been standing. Zach, as is his way these days, bowled the No. 3 with his first ball and bowled tightly until Stephen (looking at least double the age of the new woman in his life) failed to bend his knees adequately to stop a drive and then also managed to block Mash's attempts to stop the same ball.
With Zach bowling a couple wides Jnr Mngt turned back to Lord Stephen to bowl the final to overs. Reasoning being that at his pace he couldn't possible bowl any wides and he would be too slow for the 49ers to hit for the fours and sixes needed to win. Zach wasn't so sure muttering something about bowling just back of a length at pace but all was was going well until with 12 to win off 2 balls Graeme smashed Lord Stephen for huge six over long on. "I'm never going to live this down" I thought as Lord Stephen ambled in to bowl the last. But he rose to the challenge and Graeme could only pick out long off for a 2 from the final ball.
Fines (£1 each)
Man of the match: Father Matthew (Mash) for his excellent 27, a run out and a wicket.

Ian A played himself in before unleashing some lovely straight hitting to bring up his 26, getting the rate back down to 6 an over in the process. Ian T tried to follow suit but picked out cover for a useful 14.

4 required off 1…
With the field set back on the boundary (apart from wide cow corner for some strange reason) the bowler pitched the ball up on middle and Law Jnr slogged it through midwicket (someone had to use Zach’s new bat) to win the match, capping a great team performance against decent opposition.

Fines (£1 each)
- Terry for a dropped catch of J Law
- J Law for golden duck
- Mark for a 12 ball duck
- Zach for poor strike rate
Man of the match: Father Matthew (Mash) for his excellent 27, a run out and a wicket.
