Ad Hoc CC v HM Treasury and Cabinet Office - Chiswick
HM Treasury and Cabinet Office Innings
The Treasury won the toss and chose to bat on a breezy evening playing into the hands of Ad Hoc plan of squeezing them with the ball before making a meal of the chase and winning off the last ball (which worked perfectly apart from Rob B. batting too fast).
Having not taken a wicket the whole of last season, Greg bowled their opener of his second ball and was typically economical going for 3 off his two overs ably assisted by A. Spring who went for only 8. Second change bowler Rob B. (in his 2nd game for Ad Hoc) teased their other opener into picking out Jack at mid off going for just 4 runs. From the other end, Jack’s first ball was hit for the first 4 of the game and Terry’s profligate (his words not mine) keeping meant that 5 wides down leg pushed his first over past the 12 run mark to incur the first bowling fine of the season. Jack pulled it back in his second over, however, and was unlucky that debutant Christian dropped a swirler at mid-off.
Lordy bowled some excellent wind-assisted away swing going for only 7, while Mash swung it the other way beating the bat consistently until HMT’s No. 3 was surprised by Mash’s only bad ball and chipped to Greg at square leg. Pick of the bowlers, however, was Christian bowling two of their middle order before their No. 8 picked out Greg at mid-on. From the other end J Law was working his usual magic, bowling a rank full-toss down legside to wet the batsmen’s appetite followed by straight one that was heaved at gloriously. Bowled J Law, the shame.
At the death Sardar kept it tight with Law Jnr slightly more expensive (bringing Greg in from the boundary only to bowl a long hop that was smashed past him for 4 – great captaincy…) but with two daft run-outs in the last over HMT were bowled out for a highly gettable 95.
Ad Hoc Innings
Law Jnr selflessly sent himself in first and equally selflessly got out in the first over (to a rather tasty head hunting bouncer) purely in an attempt to ensure that the rest of the team got a bat... Lord and Sardar stuck around putting on a 50 partnership with some excellent running. Sardar got to his 25 in a respectable 39 balls, while Lord was bowl for 22 off 33. Mash was looking good, hitting his first runs for Ad Hoc this season, before failing to clear mid-on hitting down the ground.
Rob B., warned that a strike rate of less than 50% meant a £2 fine, came down the wicket and lofted his first ball over mid-off for two, pushing the field back in process and relieving some of the scoreboard pressure with some excellent cuts and mows to cow corner. Jack chipped in with 1 from 5 balls (Fine) bringing Searle to the crease with 6 needed of the last 2 overs. Five runs and a very generous wide not given left Greg with the honours of paddling the first ball of the last over round the corner for a single to win the match.
Fines Paid
Outstanding Fines
On closer inspection of the scorebook it was noted that Jack also had a strike rate of less than 50%... Sorry mate… Playing for Ad Hoc is getting a little expensive…
